Calibro 35 – Discomania

Cinematic funk maestros Calibro 35 have announced “Exploration,” their new studio album, which will be released June 6 via Record Kicks. The Italian outfit returns to the independent label after their 2023 Universal Music release “Nouvelle Aventures,” continuing the journey begun with last October’s “Jazzploitation” EP.

“Exploration” delves deep into cinematic jazz-funk territory, featuring imaginative reinterpretations of classics like Roy Ayers’ “Coffy” and Bob James’ “Nautilus” alongside original compositions, including lead single “Reptile Strut.” The album pays tribute to influential composers like Lalo Schifrin, Piero Umiliani (whose “Discomania” gets the Calibro treatment), and Herbie Hancock.

The Milan-based group has built a global reputation as one of independent music’s most intriguing acts since their 2007 formation. Their distinctive sound has caught the ear of hip-hop royalty, with their music sampled by Dr. Dre on “Compton” (featuring Snoop Dogg), Jay-Z’s “Picasso Baby,” and collaborations with The Child of Lov & Damon Albarn. Their artistic connections extend to PJ Harvey, Mike Patton, John Parish, Stewart Copeland, and Rokia Traoré.
